Greek script word on inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single line of Greek script tattooed diagonally across the inner wrist, shown with the palm side of the hand visible above it. The letters are drawn in a flowing, slightly slanted script with fine black outlines and solid black fill. The background is a pale blue surface and a dark object at the edge of the frame, and a healed scar runs across the wrist below the tattoo.

His grandson Lambros, nine that summer, liked to sit under the table and count the nails in the floorboards. He noticed that when a debt was finally paid, Mitsos never crossed it out. He licked the pencil, leaned close, and wrote one word beside the figure, slanting it the way swallows dip over the threshing floor. Tetelestai. When Lambros asked what it meant, his grandfather said, "It is finished. The thing is done, and nobody has to carry it up the hill again."
One October a widow named Eleni came in with a sum she had never been able to pay, the price of her husband's coffin, and laid three coins on the table. Mitsos looked at them for a long time. Then he wrote the word beside her name and, to Lambros's surprise, wrote it again beside his own.
"But you never owed anybody," the boy said. Mitsos blew the dust from the page. "Everybody owes something. I just like to see it finished, once in a while, so I remember it can be done."
