Fearless script on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and lower leg rest on a dark leather surface, with a thin silver anklet above the ankle. The word fearless is written in delicate, single-line cursive script that runs diagonally from the ankle towards the toes. The black and grey photograph shows crisp, even linework with a simple, uncluttered composition.

The night before her wedding, Ada Brack sat by the range with her grandmother's ink pot, a sliver of bone and a length of black silk. Every bride in Lower Carrow walked to the chapel barefoot over the river stones, and every one of them was marked before dawn with a word of her choosing. Ada's mother had chosen hers in the spring, before the fever took her, and the word had been left for Ada to find.

Nan Tiller would not say what the word should be. "You will know it when the stones are cold," she said, and went up to bed. Ada took the lamp down to the river. The water was loud with snowmelt. Across the ford the ferryman's boy stood on the far bank holding a lantern, as he had stood every evening since the flood took his father's boat. She thought of the crossing, how the stones shifted under a bare sole, and how nobody who crossed them ever looked down.
She wrote the word herself in one unbroken line, starting at the ankle and dragging the pen slantwise toward the toes, so the letters leaned like someone walking into weather. Her hand did not shake. By the time she set her foot on the first stone the ink was drying, and across the water the boy raised his lantern higher, as if he could read it from there.
In the morning the women said the word was a poor choice for a bride, since a bride needed to be frightened of nothing that mattered. Ada only smiled. She stepped onto the ford, the water cold to her ankles, and when she reached the far bank the boy took her hand. The lantern swung between them and threw their shadows across the stones ahead, where the path went on.
