Greek vase-style armband on three upper arms
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Three arms, each wearing a band tattoo around the upper arm, show seated and standing classical figures on a dark ground. The linework is clean and the figures are shaded in ochre and brown, with palmette and scroll borders above and below each band. The bands sit side by side across the frame, with the arms cropped at the head so no faces are visible.

The ovens were already at temperature when Maud Kettering unrolled the tracing paper across the steel bench, the pencil lines of a border copied from a chipped vase in the museum case on Tuesday. Three bands, she thought, one for each tier of the wedding cake. Outside the shutter the street was still the colour of ink, and the only sound was the hum of the proving cabinet.

Tomas came in at half four with flour already up to his elbows and asked whether the chariot was going on the cake or the cake was going under the chariot. She told him the chariot was for the lid of the box, a pair of horses drawn in piped chocolate, and the figures would be the women who had watched it from the stands: one seated with a jug on her knee, one standing with her hand raised as if to call a name across the dust.
They worked without talking for a while. The palmettes were the hard part, fan shapes of sugar that had to hold their points without slumping in the warm room. Maud had failed them three times, and on the fourth she let the lamp fall across the sheet and saw what the vase painter must have seen, that the border mattered more than the scene. It held everything in and kept the eye moving round.
At six the first van pulled up outside. Tomas wiped his hands and said the wedding party would never notice the detail. Maud lifted the box lid, looked at the standing woman's raised hand, and said someone always noticed, and it was better they noticed for the right reasons. She slid the cake onto the rack, and the window went grey.
