Giraffe head and flower on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A giraffe head rises above a red five-petalled flower and a cluster of green leaves. The giraffe has bold dark outlines, orange patches and simple shading on its face and neck, while the flower and leaves use flat, solid fills. The tattoo sits on the forearm against a plain background, with a partial grey dotwork tattoo of a head visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the last week of August the giraffe had eaten the windfalls under every Bramley in the orchard, and Maud Hollis had stopped pretending she would ring anyone about him. He moved between the trees at a slow, offended pace, bending his long neck down to the grass with the patience of a clerk reading small print. The travelling show had packed up on the Tuesday and driven off without him, and nobody in Pelham Cross seemed keen to claim a giraffe that ate hedges.

Her father had sold the orchard in June, and the buyers were coming on Friday with a surveyor and a clipboard. Maud had decided she would not be there to watch them measure the rows. Instead she spent her evenings sitting on the low wall by the gate, where her mother had planted a clump of red flowers and a stand of spiky green leaves that never seemed to need watering. The giraffe liked the flowers. He would lower his head beside her, close one dark eye, and breathe out a long warm sigh that smelled of crushed grass and cider.

On Thursday she found him standing very still beneath the last tree, staring up at a single apple that had ripened on the highest branch. Without quite deciding to, she climbed onto the wall, then onto his broad, bony shoulder, and held on to the thick mane while he lifted her higher. The apple was streaked red and gold, cool and sour when she bit into it. From up there the whole orchard looked like a map someone had forgotten to finish.

When she slid back down, the giraffe turned and walked away along the lane toward the coast road, his spotted flank catching the last light like a patchwork of rust and honey. Maud stood at the gate with the apple core in her hand and did not call him back.
