Green artichoke tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A shaded green artichoke with layered leaves sits on the forearm, with a small line of lettering above it and other tattoos partly visible at the lower edge. The linework is soft, and the green ink is built up with lighter highlights and darker tones to give the bud depth. The shallow depth of field keeps the arm sharp while the background falls away into blur.

Everyone told her they were finished. The frost had blackened the outer leaves and the stalks lay down flat like wet rope.

She went out anyway, every morning, with a sack and a bread knife, and every morning she cut back the dead leaves and wrapped the heart of each plant in straw and sacking the way her mother had shown her. Her brother Alfred laughed at her from the back step. "Those things have had their day," he said. "Come in and eat a parsnip."
On the twelfth morning she found the bud. It was no bigger than a fist, tight and grey-green, and when she pressed a thumb to it the scales gave a little, like a green sheet pulled over a bed. She carried it in cupped in both hands, the way you'd carry a robin with a broken wing, and set it on the table between the salt and the lamp.
Alfred ate his parsnip and said nothing for a long while. Then he went out to the garden and came back with the bread knife, and by Candlemas the whole row was budding, a dozen green hearts pushing up through the frost as if they had only been waiting for someone to ask.
