Green butterfly on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A butterfly with open wings sits on the upper shoulder and collarbone area, drawn in a realistic style with fine detail in the wing patterns and antennae. The wings use bright green panels with black and brown edging, and a soft dark shadow beneath the butterfly makes it appear to float above the skin. The photograph is a close, slightly angled shot of the tattoo with a silver chain visible at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The butterfly came aboard in a crate of Chilean grapes, somewhere south of the Horn, and by the third week out it had claimed the galley as its own. Nobody believed me when I said it was green, not brown like the moth Ruddock swore he'd seen. Green like the tin patina on the old ship's bell, green like the bottle glass the second mate kept on his windowsill to catch the light.

I kept it fed on sugar water in a saucer by the range. It would walk the warm rim of the stove, open its wings to the heat, then close them again, and the shadow it threw on the bulkhead was bigger than anything so small had any right to be. Cook Ansel said it was a bad omen, as cooks always say, and then stole a pinch of sugar for it when he thought I wasn't looking.

When the glass went flat and the fog came down thick enough to hide the bowsprit, the butterfly lifted off the saucer and went straight out through the open hatch into air that should have killed it. I ran up the ladder after it. The sea was the colour of its wings for one minute, a green so bright it hurt the eyes, and then the fog closed over and I was only a cook in wet boots with an empty saucer in my hand.

We raised Valparaíso eleven days later. On the quay a woman was selling pinned insects from a tray, and among the beetles lay a single malachite, wings spread flat, its shadow painted beneath it on the card. I bought it for two pesos and a loaf. I have never told the captain. He would only say the sea gives back what it takes, and I would rather it kept the one that flew.
