Blue butterfly on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A single butterfly is shown in open wing view, with teal and blue panels, pale highlighted edges and dark black linework. The wings have soft gradient shading and a slight three-dimensional shadow beneath them, set on freckled skin near the shoulder blade and neck. The background is dark and out of focus, with a small metal clasp visible at the neck.

The night the power went out at the Ancoats natural history store, I was the only one left on the drawers. Two hundred trays of pinned insects sat in the dark, each labelled in my late aunt's careful copperplate, and the emergency lamp turned everything the colour of weak tea. Everything except one tray at the back, which refused to go grey.

It was teal first, then a blue like a swimming bath seen from the top of a high flat. I fetched the cabinet key from its hook and lifted the lid. The specimen had been set with its wings open, and someone had drawn a shadow beneath them so faithfully that the card looked like it might lift. The label said only Unknown locality, collected 1931, in pencil that had almost faded away.
Then the lamp gave a little hum, and the left wing trembled. I leaned closer and saw the pin had worked loose in the cork. I reached for it with a pair of forceps, but the butterfly lifted on its own, turned once above the drawer, and circled the lamp twice as if taking its bearings. Then it slipped through the open loading bay and out over the canal, where the streetlights were coming back on one by one.
I wrote in the ledger: one specimen released, weather fair. I crossed it out and wrote it again. Above the water, the sodium light caught it, and for a moment it was the only blue thing in the whole city.
