Green-eyed reptile tattoo on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A reptile's head with a bright green eye, orange-ringed iris and detailed scales wraps across the lower leg, with open jaws and teeth at the lower edge. The scales and skin folds are shaded in greys, greens and browns, giving a rendered, three-dimensional look. A dark, thin linework outline runs along the lower part of the leg beside the foot, and the background shows a blue wall and a black treatment couch.

The crate had been nailed shut in Liverpool, and by the time the barge reached the top lock at Burnley the sacking inside had stopped moving, which Abel Penhallow said was a good sign and Ada Clough did not believe a word of.

She lifted the hatch with the windlass hook and there it was, lying in the wet straw with its jaws propped on a coil of rope. The eye came first. It was green as bottle glass held up to a lamp, ringed in orange like a cracked marigold, and it followed her hand the whole length of the lock side without the rest of its head moving at all.
Penhallow had paid her two shillings to keep it quiet until the fair at Colne, and she had kept it quiet for nine days on herring and rainwater. Its scales had gone from dull to dressed-brass bright in the damp. On the tenth morning she found the crate empty and a trail of flattened reeds leading down the towpath to the sluice, where the sun had just cleared the moor and laid warm light across the stones.
Penhallow never came back for it. Ada wrote to the fair and got no reply, and after a while she stopped checking the hatch at all. Some evenings she carried a bucket of fish down to the water's edge, and some evenings she found the bucket licked clean and the lock gates shining with a long green shape sunk in the shallows, one eye open, watching the lamp in her kitchen window until it went out.
