Japanese armour sleeve on an arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo covers the arm from the upper arm down towards the forearm, with layered armour plates at the top and a fine scale pattern below. Swirling curved forms and shaded panels run down the lower arm, with smooth grey shading and dark outlines. The ink is entirely black and grey, photographed against a black chair and a wooden floor with the subject's face out of frame.

The lacing cord had gone stiff in the damp again, so I spent the morning soaking every thread in a bowl of warm rice water until the lacquer on the plates softened enough to bend. Master Tomita watched from his stool and said nothing, which meant the work was wrong somewhere and he was waiting for me to find it.

It was the fourth plate of the left shoulder. I had laced the rows top to bottom, the way I was taught, so each scale overlapped the one below like the flank of a carp, and every row sat level. What I had not done was count the holes. The grandson of a dead captain had brought the breastplate in the week before, asking for it to be made whole for a festival at the shrine. He told me his grandfather had been narrow in the shoulder and had never once let anyone lace him from behind, so he always tied the cords himself.
I unpicked the row and began again from the centre outwards, the way Tomita showed me for helmets. By dusk the shoulder lay flat and close, the iron scales dark and fine in lamplight, the swirling cloud pattern below them running clean to the hem. When the grandson came for it he held the plates up to the window, turned them once, and asked who had taught me to fit armour to a man who was no longer there. I told him the truth, which was that Tomita had never once been wrong about the holes.
