Storybook sleeve with rabbit and top-hatted figure

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sleeve tattoo runs from the upper arm down the forearm, filled with a dense scene of storybook characters, including a rabbit-like figure and a character in a top hat. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading built up in grey washes and dark accents across the foliage, figures and background objects. The image is in black and grey and is framed close on the arm against a plain wall, with a red top and a framed picture visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bell over the door of Marrowby House had not rung since the spring, yet at seven each morning it chimed twice, and Mrs Tallis blamed the wind. You came down with your sponge bag and a borrowed umbrella, meaning to reach the prom before the gulls were up, and found the hall already full of guests who had not booked. A white rabbit stood on the newel post checking a pocket watch. Beside the barometer a hatter in a tall black hat was pouring tea into a cup with no handle, and he looked up at you as though you were the one who had come in late.

"Sit, sit," said the hatter. "The register is open at the page where you were supposed to sign."

The register was a ledger bound in sea-green cloth, and the last entry was in your own handwriting, dated a week before you had arrived in Marrowby at all. Under it someone had drawn a small stiff engraving of a gate with a lock shaped like a teacup. The rabbit tapped his watch. "It's a quarter past the sea," he said, "and the sea does not wait for lodgers." Behind him the hall mirror had turned into a lantern-lit corridor, and far down it a row of hedgehogs was playing croquet with flamingos on the sand.

You wrote your name. The ink ran the colour of tarnished silver, and the hatter clapped, delighted, and cut you a slice of seed cake that tasted faintly of salt. When you looked up the hall was empty except for the rabbit's watch, lying face up on the mat, stopped at a quarter past the hour you had left.
