Green luna moth with chains on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large green luna moth with yellow-ringed eyespots sits centrally, with a pale pink flower-like shape behind its wings and a dark central body marked with a yellow and green eye. Silver chains loop beneath the wings, ending in purple crystal pendants. Bold black outlines, smooth colour fills and light grey shading give the design a neo-traditional look, with a pale skin background.

The moth had been on the drying-shed door since the light went, wings spread flat against the creosote like a pair of green leaves pressed in a book. Nell's father would not touch it. "A thing that's chosen a door stays till it's ready," he said, and went back to stacking Discovery apples into crates, counting under his breath the way he did when he was cross.

Nell fetched the chain from the hook by the well. It was the one that had once held the cider-house gate shut, rusted to the colour of stewed tea, and her gran had always said the links were silver underneath. The purple stones hung from the ends in a jam jar on the windowsill, dug from the furrows along the north boundary where the plough kept turning up pieces of something older than the farm. Nell took the jar with her.
She laid the chain across the step beneath the moth. For a long moment nothing happened. Then the wings lifted, slow as breath, and the moth dropped onto the links as if it had been waiting for them. Its eyespots opened in the torchlight. The stones clicked softly against the metal, and the moth rose, circled the old pear tree twice, and settled back on the door.
Her father set down his crate. He looked at the chain strung across the step, then at the moth, and said nothing for a while. "Your gran always said it wanted paying," he said at last. Nell carried the next crate to the cart and left the chain where it lay. By morning the moth had gone, and the chain was looped over the gate post as neatly as if someone had hung it there on purpose. The jar on the sill was empty, and Nell did not go looking for the stones.
