Colour tattoo of a green parachute above a red heart with curved script lettering, on a person's lower back.

Green parachute and red heart on lower back

Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo

A green parachute with purple trim and a yellow panel hangs above a red heart, with thin black lines running from the canopy down to the heart. Curved black script lettering arcs around the parachute, and the shading is mostly flat colour with black outlines. The image is a close, slightly angled shot of the lower back, with a purple garment at the bottom edge and a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The green canopy came down over the north wall of Harrowmere with its purple hem snapping, and the whole market stopped to watch where it would land. Tamsin the cobbler's girl had sewn the yellow panel herself, a square of old lamp silk patched over the place where the last drop had torn. Beneath it, on forty cords of waxed flax, swung a heart carved from red oak and lacquered until it looked wet.

Nobody in Harrowmere had sent a heart through the air in nine years, not since the old Queen's sky-men were hanged for selling the wind. The law still stood, though, carved over the gate in letters worn soft by rain: whatever is sent from above must be caught by the one it names, or it goes back to the sender unopened. So the crowd pressed toward the mill, where the heart drifted slowly, turning, the cords hissing against the sails.

It came down at last in the millstone yard, bounced once, and rolled to the feet of Osric the miller's son, who had not been looking up at all. He had been counting sacks. The heart split along its grain when he picked it up, and inside lay a folded scrap in a hand he knew: Our disappointed hearts will fall.

Osric read it twice. Then he tucked the scrap into his apron, carried the empty heart to the well, and filled it with water until it floated. He set it spinning in the trough so the market could see it was only wood. Nobody cheered. But a girl with a yellow patch on her sleeve was already tying new cords to the north wall.
