Watercolour-style snail on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A snail with a spiralled shell and a loose, sketchy outline sits at the left of the upper back, with a second rounded shape above it. Thin black linework is filled with washes of pink, orange, yellow, green and blue, with scattered paint-like splashes and small plants and grass running across the lower and right side. The photograph is taken from behind, centred on the shoulder blades, with the skin tone and soft lighting keeping the colours clear.

The grass had gone to seed by the middle of August, and the snail had been living under the Bramley trees for as long as anyone could say. Dad called him Mr Dunmore, after the man who used to sell us apples at the gate. I was twelve and sulking because I'd been made to sit in the orchard with Aunt Joan's paint tins while the others carried crates to the lorry. Half the pans were cracked, so I wet them with my spit and tried to coax the pink out of the lid.

Mr Dunmore did not care. He climbed a dock leaf with his two eyes out like periscopes, then slid down over a windfall that had split open and gone sweet, leaving a silver line that dried in the sun. I tried to copy him. Every shell I painted looked like a sad bun. Every trail I attempted ran the blue into the yellow and made a green I hadn't asked for. Dad came down the rows at four with his arms full of cardboard and stood behind me without saying anything for a while.
"He's been going the same way every year," he said eventually. "Look at the track." I looked. Over the summer the slime had marked a path from the wall to the big tree, looping round the stumps where the old hives used to stand, and the grass along it was greener than the grass beside it. The snail had been painting that orchard for years, and nobody had thought to watch him do it.
I left the page drying on the step. In the morning it had a rainbow bleeding across the margin and, in the corner, a small shell that was very nearly right. I still have it. Mr Dunmore was gone by then, but his track ran all the way to the gate, and I followed it with my finger until the dew soaked through my sleeve.
