Straw hat on the upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A straw hat with a hatched, engraved-style outline sits on the outer upper arm, tilted diagonally with its brim angled across the skin. The crown is shaded in black and grey, and a solid red band wraps around the base of the crown. A thin dark chin cord hangs from the brim and ends in a small knot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off the Haddow flats took Mabel Quinn's straw hat on the first Tuesday of September. It lifted the hat clean off her head as she bent over the potato drills and sent it cartwheeling over the dyke. The chin cord was still knotted under her jaw, so the hat jerked up short and hung there, spinning, like a kite that had lost interest in being flown.

Her brother Tom ran after it with a spade in one hand and his cap in the other, shouting at the sky as though the sky owed him money. The hat dipped over the reeds, skimmed the mill race, and settled on the bank beside Jock Ferrie, who was asleep on an upturned crate with his boots in the water.

Jock woke when the cord tugged at his collar. He looked at the hat, then at Tom, then at the red band, which had faded in the sun to the colour of a robin's chest. "That isn't a hat," he said. "That's a boat with a ribbon round it." He held it out, and Tom took it, and neither of them said anything for a while about the price of good straw.

Tom carried it back across the field and set it on his sister's head. She pulled the knot tight under her chin with two quick tugs and went back to the drills. "You could have let it go," Tom said. "Let it go where?" said Mabel. "Half the county's shed is in that wind, and I've still got my potatoes."
