Green scale pattern on the top of a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A row of overlapping scale shapes, arranged in a diagonal band, sits on the top of a foot. Each scale has a soft pale yellow centre, shaded toward green, with thin teal outlines and gentle shading. The photograph is taken from above on a dark floor, with the toes and painted nails visible at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okafor never let anyone scale a mackerel with the knife held flat, and he said so every morning at half five, before the shutters went up on Freeman Street. Dessie, who was fourteen and hopeless, kept trying anyway, because the market paid cash and the gulls were worse company than the old man.

The trouble started with a sea bream that came off the Cromer boat with its scales still bright as sweet wrappers. Okafor held it under the strip light and said nothing for a long while. Then he worked a thumbnail under one scale, a clean half-moon the colour of weak tea going green at the rim, and laid it on Dessie's palm. "Count them," he said. "Go on. Every one shingles the one beneath it so the rain runs off. A fish that loses a few is still a fish. A fish that loses the lot is just a rumour."

Dessie didn't understand until the Thursday, when the sea went flat and the wholesaler's van came back with half its load. The old man sat on an upturned crate and turned a bream over in his big hands, running his thumb against the grain, and said the trick was never the cutting. It was the patience of the overlap, each layer trusting the one under it to hold.

That afternoon Dessie scraped a whole tray of scales into the drain outside the back door, meaning to hose them away. They clung to the wet slabs in rows, pale and yellow at the heart, edged with green, and when the tide of rainwater came down the gutter they didn't wash off. They slid down the slope one overlapping step at a time, like something heading home.
