Teal scales tattoo on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A diagonal row of overlapping scallop-shaped scales runs across the top of a bare foot, with one smaller scale detached below it. The scales have dark outlines and are shaded in teal and blue with pale cream highlights. The foot rests on sand, and the toenails are painted with leopard-print patterns.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide has left the rocks glittering below the Skerry light, and you are the one sent down to fetch the lamp oil the boat failed to bring. Halfway along the causeway you notice a line of scales pressed into the wet weed, overlapping like the shingles on a roof, each one teal as a kingfisher and edged in black. They run downhill towards the water in a neat diagonal, as if something long had dragged itself out and thought better of it.

Your grandmother, Ada Penrose, kept the light for forty years and never once spoke of the sea folk, though she kept a tin of loose scales in the lamp room cupboard beside the brass polish. You had always taken the tin for a sewing kit. Now you crouch and pick up the last detached scale, a thin, cool curve with a pale cream sheen along its inner edge, and it warms in your palm the way a coin does after a long time in a pocket.

You climb back with the oil and the scale, and you set it on the sill of the lamp room where the beam can find it. When the light sweeps round at dusk, the scale flares teal and cream, and out past the reef a long shape turns over in the dark and sinks without a splash. In the morning the tin lies open, every scale in it gone, and the one on the sill has a small notch missing from its edge, as though someone had counted what they were owed.
