Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A photograph of a foot with a curling thistle vine tattoo. The design has green leaves and stems outlined in black, with two purple thistle flower heads and a spiral tendril. The shading is smooth and the colours are bright against the pale skin, with the vine sweeping from the top of the foot towards the toes.

You have been climbing the south wall of Kilbrae Castle since the mist lifted, and the thistle has already caught your eye. Rhona Dunning, who keeps the gate key at the village shop, says the old lords planted it on the ramparts to keep the English off the stairs. Nobody believes that now. The plant simply comes back every summer, pushing through the mortar where the lime has failed, its stems curling like the tail of a dog told to wait.

You kneel on the wet stone and cut a runner with the penknife your father gave you. The sap smells bitter and green. Below, the loch is the colour of pewter, and a heron stands in the shallows as though it has paid rent. You wrap the cutting in a damp handkerchief and tuck it inside your coat, thinking of the spiral at the end of the vine, the one that always turns back on itself before it reaches the edge.

By the time you reach the foot of the tower, the light has gone gold across the purple heads. Rhona is waiting at the gate with her arms folded. "Well?" she says. You hold out the handkerchief. She unwraps it, studies it for a long moment, then laughs, a short sound like a latch lifting. "That's the one from the chapel window," she says. "Took the monks a century to draw it and the rain a decade to wash it out."

You plant it that evening in the bed beneath her kitchen window, where the sun lingers longest. Rhona says it will climb the chapel wall again in a few summers, one leaf at a time, and that the stones will look as if they have always been green.
