Green snake in a shield crest on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A grey serpent with a pale, shaded body coils across a green shield-shaped crest framed by silver-grey ornate scrollwork. The shield has a quilted green backdrop, and small dotted lines hang beneath the scrolls. Bold black outlines and soft blended shading give the piece a dimensional look, with mixed green and grey tones against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener at Hollin Cross kept a grey snake in the well under the gate, and every spring he set a saucer of warm milk on the cold stone lip. Nobody in the village thought this strange. The snake was pale on its belly and darker along the spine, and it lay coiled in the black water like a rope someone had forgotten to haul in.

His daughter Nell thought the milk was wasted. She was eleven and had opinions about most things, including the green velvet box he kept on the top shelf, the one with silver scrollwork hinges and a row of brass studs along the lid. He never opened it in front of her. One August, when the roses blighted and the apples split on the branch, he finally lifted the lid while she watched. Inside was a shield-shaped cushion of quilted green, and nothing else.

"The snake isn't a pet," he said. "It's what remembers where the water runs. When my father was gardener, the spring dried up and the village blamed the snake, so they sacked it and threw it in the lane. The well stayed dry for seven years. Then the water came back, and nobody could say why." He pressed the cushion flat with his thumb. "I keep the saucer full so it never needs to go looking for another well."

That night Nell crept out with the jug herself. The water was black and still, and the milk spread across it in a pale ring. Something moved under the surface, slow as a thought, and a cool coil brushed her wrist. She did not pull away. In the morning the saucer was empty and the roses had opened.
