Skull and snake on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A grey skull with green-lit eye sockets sits at the top of the design, with a grey snake with green diamond markings coiling through and around it. The snake's head, with an open jaw and visible teeth, rests at the bottom. The shading is smooth and the outlines are bold, set against a pale background of skin and a dark chair.

Hush now, let the dough rest while I tell it, the way it was told to me over a warm oven. Nobody in Thornbury Lane lit a fire before the church bell that winter, not since Abel Crane nailed a yellowed skull above the proving cupboard. He had dug it out of the canal bank, and every dawn after, a green-flecked snake came up through the drain grate to wind itself round the bone as if it were paying rent.

Tobias, the baker's boy, was nine and afraid of nothing except the dark. He swore the eye sockets glowed green whenever the gas caught, and he counted the coils with a floury finger. Seven, he said, one for every loaf Abel had ever burnt. Abel laughed and threw the crusts down the drain, and the snake ate every one, and the lane agreed that was the only decent thing a snake could do.

Then the mill flooded and the lane went dark for a month. No flour came up the hill, and the cupboard stood bare. Tobias took a candle down the grate with the last handful of rye and came back up with wet sleeves and a face nobody could read. He would not say what he had seen down there, only that the snake had let him pass.

On the first morning the bread rose again, the skull's eyes were lit green in the grey light, and the snake lay stretched across the warm bricks by the oven door. Abel said nothing. He cut the first loaf, warm and split, and set the heel of it where the snake could reach.
