Snake coiled around crystals on a thigh
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large snake coils down the thigh, its head raised at the top with the body wrapping around itself in several loops. Clusters of pointed crystals fill the gaps between the coils and along the lower edge. The work uses fine, dark linework with soft grey shading on the scales and body, and the composition is tall and vertical across the skin.

The snow has sealed the pass since noon, and the innkeeper's daughter has shut the shutters on the taproom. You are the only guest still awake, sitting by the stove with a cup of mulled cider gone cold, listening to the stable door knock in the wind.

The landlord, Oskar, tells you about the serpent under the hill, the one that coiled round the quartz seam for three hundred winters and kept the old mine from folding in on itself. Every spring a miner carried a crystal up to trade, and every spring the snake grew heavier, its pale scales dusted silver with stone. You laugh at him. He does not laugh back, only refills your cup and says the mine has been quiet since the last man stopped taking more than he needed.
Near midnight the stove dies, and you take a lamp down to the cellar for coal. Behind the barrels there is a passage you never noticed, and it glitters: crystal points push out of the rock like frost on glass, and between them lies a coil of pale body, loop upon loop, its head raised toward your light. It does not strike. It only watches you, then turns slowly toward the stairs, as if asking you to fetch something for the next traveller.
In the morning the road is open and Oskar has gone up to the mine. On the cellar step you find a single quartz point, cold and clear, warm only where your thumb has been. You pocket it. Behind you the cellar door creaks shut on its own, and somewhere beneath the floor something settles back into the dark, patient as weather.
