Green snake on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large snake with a raised head and coiled body is tattooed on the outer thigh of a leg shown in profile. The scales are finely rendered in several shades of green, with grey shading that gives the body depth and roundness. The snake fills most of the frame against a dark leather seat and a dim background.

Dear Nell, you will think I have lost my wits, but the green snake from the old oak at the wood's edge has taken to sleeping on our woodpile. Father says it's only a grass snake sunning itself, and I'd believe him if I hadn't seen it lift its head clear above the logs the way the parson lifts his chin in church. Its scales go from the colour of new bracken at the neck to a deeper green along the coils, and when the light catches them there's grey underneath, like pond water after rain.

Mrs Abbott at the shop says it is the same snake that guarded the well when her grandmother was a girl, and that you must leave it a saucer of milk on the first of May or the wood will take a child in exchange. I laughed at her, but I did leave the saucer. This morning it was empty and the rim was still wet, and there was a dropped glove on the step that is certainly not mine.

I have decided I will not tell Father about the glove. I think you would do the same. Come at Michaelmas if you can get the carrier to bring you, and bring that blue ribbon you promised me. I will show you the snake myself, though I shall stand well back.

Your loving sister, Bet
