Nobody in Skerrow Quay believed Mrs Haddock about the lizard until the Tuesday the breakwater went under. You had sold her a bait box that morning, and you were the one who saw it first, a long green head lifting out of the harbour mouth, a yellow eye as big as a dinner plate, and frills of turquoise flaring behind its neck like a fishwife's shawl.

It had come up the estuary chasing the mackerel shoals, and it did not seem to know the difference between a fishing smack and a sandwich. The harbourmaster blew his whistle. The lifeboat crew pulled their oilskins on backwards. You stood on the slipway with a crate of ice in your arms, and the creature turned its head towards you and opened its jaw, rows of teeth glinting, a red tongue curling like a flag in a hard wind.

"Hold on," you told the nearest boy, who was holding on to you. "Hold on to your butts."

It was the only advice you had, and it proved correct. The beast gave one enormous shake that sent the bait boats spinning, then leapt the sea wall in a spray of brine and sea holly and went clattering off towards the moors. By supper the whole town was repeating your line, and the red flowers on the harbour wall had never looked so bright.
