I am writing about room six, which the gentleman in the grey suit has now occupied for nine days, since the pass closed on the Tuesday. He arrived on foot, in the snow, with no luggage but a briefcase he has not once opened in my sight. He signed the register as Mr Voss and paid in coins I could not place. The bank in Kendal has since declined to identify them, so they are in the tin with the spare keys.

He does not eat the breakfast. He sits in the lounge by the fire with his hands clasped on his knee and watches the snow the way a man watches a debtor. Last night the Hendersons' boy asked him if he was from London, and he said, quite gently, that London was a rumour he had heard about. The boy has not been the same since.

The telephone line is down to the village, and I have had no word from the road office. Yet he has not once asked to leave, nor complained about the damp or the price of the room, which I would have welcomed. When I told him the gritter was expected Thursday, he only nodded and said it was a reasonable estimate for a world of this size.

I am sending this by the post van, weather permitting. If the office wishes to replace me, I will understand. I only ask that someone devise a form for the situation, because I have run out of ideas, and the cellar stocks are holding up better than the guest.
