Realism style black and grey tattoo of a wrinkled humanoid creature in a suit and tie, with a small red shadow, on a person's calf.

Grey creature in a suit on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a pale, wrinkled humanoid head with one visible dark eye, set above a dark suit jacket, shirt collar and tie. The shading is smooth and layered, with strong contrast in the folds of skin and the jacket, and a thin red shadow sits behind the head. The figure is centred on the calf, filling most of the lower leg against a plain blue backdrop.

The Registry of Lost Property in Calderhythe has never once been visited by anybody who wasn't already sorry about something, so when the grey gentleman came in at ten past four on a Tuesday, I knew he was there about the umbrella. Nobody ever asks for a thing they've lost. They ask for the thing they gave away.

He wore a black suit cut for someone with more shoulder than the rest of us, a collar stiff as card, and a tie knotted so tight it looked like a decision. His skin had the crumpled softness of a glove left out in the rain, and his one dark eye settled on the ledger before it settled on me. "Umbrella, green silk, handle of whalebone," he said. "Deposited the fourth of March, 1911, by a Miss Ada Pell."

That was my grandmother's name. I had come across it myself the week before, hunting for old rent receipts, and had taken it for a clerk's joke. I opened the cabinet anyway. The umbrella was there, dry as paper, its silk gone the colour of pond water. "She never came back for it," he said. "I did. Every year on the fourth of March I stand at this counter, and every year she is not here. This time I thought I might ask who would sign on her behalf."

I signed. He thanked me, tucked the umbrella under his arm and walked out into a drizzle that did not seem to touch him. Through the window I watched him open it. Then I wrote my own name in the ledger, under hers, in the column marked Collected, and found the pen had dried halfway through the word.
