A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had been counting the switchbacks since the thaw, forty-one of them between the village of Hollin and the saddle at Caddow, and each one ended in the same stubborn curl of stone where the old road doubled back on itself. Her uncle called it the Knot. Nobody had ever cut it. It was simply there, a loop in the rock the colour of wet slate, as if the mountain had tried to write its name and given up halfway through.

The carrier's cart had lost a wheel at the Knot the winter before, and the driver, a silent man called Ansel Brook, had walked nine miles to the inn with the axle across his shoulders. Marta was sent up with a chisel and a sack of lime to make the bend safer. She worked three days with rain running down her collar, tracing the spiral in white, following the grain where it curled like smoke, or bracken, or the inside of a shell.

On the fourth morning fog rolled off the scree and swallowed the valley. She could not see the road, only the lime lines she had drawn, which ran on past the edge of the cut into nothing. She stepped along them slowly, one hand on the cold rock, and understood that the lines were not a warning at all but a path the stone had always half remembered. Each loop led her to the next.

When the fog thinned, the cart was waiting below the bend with its new wheel fixed, and Ansel stood at the edge with his cap in his hands. He looked down at the white curves on the rock, then up at her. "The inn will want to know if it's safe," he said. Marta shrugged and watched the first cart of the day take the turn without slowing. Behind it the rain was already loosening the lime, but the curve held.
