Small triangle tattoo on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person in a black leather biker jacket, white open-necked shirt and pale ripped denim, with hands in the pockets. A small black tattoo of three triangles sits on the upper chest below the collar, shown in thin, even linework. The muted grey background and soft light keep the focus on the tattoo and the outfit.

The surveyor's office in Thornleigh kept its maps in flat drawers, and Margit Holloway had been told she would never be allowed to touch the good ink. She touched it anyway the week the damp got into the north archive. Three triangles, she was asked to draw, one above two, the way the old boundary stones had been marked before anyone bothered with letters. She drew them small enough to fit under a collar.

Nobody in the office believed a triangle could mark a boundary, but the river did not care what anyone believed. Every spring it shifted a few yards east, and every spring the parish argued about where one farm ended and the next began. Margit had a ruler, a pair of brass dividers, and a theory that the three points were not corners at all but stations, places where a line had to be checked against the sky before it could be trusted.

She took the dividers to the fen on a grey Thursday and found the first station beneath a broken gatepost, exactly where her drawing said it would be. The second sat in a drainage cut, and the third was a stone she had to lever out of the mud with her heel. When she finally stood on all three in a straight line, the river had stopped moving for the first time in living memory, or so the farmers said at the inquest. Margit only remembered the cold coming up through her boots and the small, exact satisfaction of a closed figure.
