GRL PWR lettering on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits on a white textured surface, wearing a white shirt and black underwear, with one hand resting near the hip. A small tattoo of the words GRL PWR is set in thin, black, block-style capitals on the outer thigh. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the soft natural light and neutral background keep the focus on the small lettering.

You learn the shorthand before you learn the sheep. Your gran wrote everything in capitals on the backs of feed receipts, MART, VET, FROST, and the one she kept under the tea caddy said only TRY AGAIN in letters so small you needed the window light to read them. Winter on Hollin Fell is mostly counting: bales, ewes, days until the road is clear enough for the Land Rover to get down to Kendal.

It is the second week of February and the shed smells of wet straw and iodine. Nell from the next farm has come up to help with the lambing, and she is the only person you know who swears in complete sentences. A ewe is down in the far pen with her eyes rolled white, and one leg is back. You kneel in the muck with your sleeves shoved past the elbow and your breath going up in clouds, and Nell says, "Slow, love, slow," the way your gran used to.
The lamb comes at last, slick and furious, and shakes its head as if it has an opinion about the whole arrangement. You rub it with straw until it sneezes. Afterwards, in the kitchen, the kettle ticks and you find a receipt in your coat pocket. Someone has written on the back in pencil, GRL PWR, in the same thin capitals as the note under the caddy. You don't remember writing it. It might have been you, months ago, half asleep by the stove.
You smooth it flat, fold it into the tea caddy beside TRY AGAIN, and go back out into the cold to check the pens.
