Black and grey shaded rose tattoo on the upper arm of a person with a raised arm, with a bare midriff and blue fabric visible beside it.

Black and grey rose on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small rose is tattooed on the upper arm, shown in a close view with the arm raised. The petals are rendered with soft shading and fine detail, giving the flower depth and volume against the skin. The tattoo is in black and grey ink, and the bare midriff and blue fabric in the lower part of the frame sit out of focus.

You learn the price of roses by the wet. Under the tin awning on Hollins Street, Mrs Okafor's buckets stand in a row, and the water runs off the edge in a thin silver curtain that never quite stops. Nobody buys black roses in March. You know this. You arranged them anyway, dark heads turned upward like they were listening for something, because the old woman who sold you the cuttings said the colour would sell itself to whoever needed it.

A boy in a yellow cagoule stops at the stall at half past four, when the light has gone the colour of dishwater. He has a coin in his fist and a question he keeps almost asking. You wait. You have learned that the questions people bring to flower stalls are rarely about flowers. He asks which one lasts longest in the rain. You hand him the tightest bud, the one with its petals folded in on themselves like a closed letter, and tell him it will open only if he stops checking the clock.

He doesn't buy it. He puts the coin back in his pocket and runs for the bus, and the bud stays in your palm, cold and heavy as a stone. Next morning the stall is shuttered, and a note is pinned to the awning in capitals: TAKE THE LOT, THE RAIN IS YOURS NOW. You take the lot. The petals are still closing, one at a time, the way they always do, and you let them.
