Guitar headstock and roses on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A guitar headstock with tuning pegs in a wood-brown finish sits above two red roses with yellow centres and dark green leaves. Bold black outlines and solid flat fills define the design, with some shading in the petals. The tattoo is shown on a bare lower leg against a patterned grey backdrop, with a foot visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Maureen, you asked me in your last card whether Danny ever sits still long enough to be happy, and the honest answer is that he does, but only in the back of the van with the headstock of that old Telecaster propped on his knee while he rubs the pegs with a rag. He won't let anyone else touch the tuning. Says the wood remembers every hand that's held it. I told him wood doesn't remember anything, but he just smiled the way he does and kept polishing.

The wedding was in the church hall at Sutton Coldfield, with the trestle tables pushed against the wall and a tea urn that hissed every time someone opened the hatch. Our Gemma wore pale yellow because she said red was for show-offs, which made the roses in the bouquet look like they were laughing at her. Danny played three songs with the hall's borrowed amp, and on the second one a string snapped clean across the room and landed in the custard. Nobody minded. He just retuned on the spot, pegs turning one by one, while the best man counted the bars out loud.

When the lights went down for the last dance, I saw him look at the back of the room where Gemma's new husband had his hand flat on the bass drum, grinning like a boy. Danny's fingers stopped on the strings and he let the silence hang there. That was the whole wedding for me, Maureen: a room full of people who had waited for a single note to come back.
