Red roses and bud on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several roses in red, orange and yellow, with one open bloom at the centre, a smaller rose behind it and a closed bud at the lower end. Bold black outlines define the petals and green leaves, and the shading is solid and smooth. The arm is photographed against a dark, blurred background with a white surface and printed material behind it.

Dear Tom,

The cart came up the Scarrow Gap on Tuesday with the roses wrapped in wet sacking, and the carter swore they'd not survive the climb. Half of them did. I've put the red ones in the blue jug on the bar, where the drovers can see them from the door, and the orange ones in the back parlour where the damp can't reach. Mrs Achterberg from the lower farm asked whether they came from the glasshouse at Kirkby, and I said they came from a man who owes me money, which is nearly true.

The big bloom, the one with the yellow heart curling in on itself, opened on the Wednesday while you were still a day out on the tops with the heifers. I stood in the yard and watched the light come off the scree and settle on it, and I remembered what you said about roses up here always running a week behind the sky. You were right, damn you. Everything up here is.

There's one bud left, low on the stem, still tight and green at the base where the petals just show their red edge. I've set it on the sill in a jar of water with its leaves still on. I know you'll say I should cut it and sell it to the Bradshaws' girl, who pays well for things that won't last. I won't. Come down the pass before it opens and you can see it done.

Love, Nell
