Between dances I told him about the seed catalogue in your bag, the one with the red Flanders poppies on the cover, and he laughed and said poppies don't grow in Kent gardens, they only come up where the ground has been turned over and left alone. I thought of the field behind your father's place, all that scarlet that rose the year after the ploughing.

Near midnight a dragonfly got in through the open fire door, blue-bodied and lost, and went round the chandeliers three times before it settled on the rim of my glass. Mr Crane wanted to shoo it out with a menu. I didn't let him. It sat there while the band played the last waltz, its wings so thin the light went straight through them, and I thought, this is what it looks like to be unafraid of a room.

I'm writing this on the train. Tell Mother I'm coming home for the harvest and that I'll bring the poppy seed for the bed by the wall. The dragonfly is probably still in there somewhere, working its way through the dark.
