The clipper came back to me in the post today, wrapped in a page of the local paper and no note, which is how I knew it was yours. You always did think a thing was clearer without words. The cord was knotted the way I taught you, and there was a smear of oil on the blade guard, so you must have been using it on somebody, which means the Crowther lads are back in Hull and you've not gone soft yet.

I'll tell you what I did with the booth. Mr Pask wanted the pitch for the dodgems, so I've let the canvas go and kept the chair. It sits in the back of the van by the spare wheel, and every Saturday I sit in it with the clipper plugged into the lighter socket and listen to it run. Mother bought that clipper off a sailor in Scarborough in 1938, and the words along the side were her idea, painted on by the man in the next booth who did signs. Like mother like son. I used to think it was a joke. Your father thought it was a warning.

Come home at Christmas if the fair lets you. Bring the good scissors, the ones you hid from your sister. Nobody else in this family has ever been able to make a boy look like he has somewhere to be, and I'd like to see if you still can.
