One step at a time script with infinity symbols on ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of thin black script reading "One step at a time", running up the side of the ankle, with an infinity symbol at each end of the lettering. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken at a slight angle against a dark background, so the skin tone and ink contrast are clear.

You carried the king's message up to Bramwell on a wet morning in Ostry, the kingdom of three rivers and no reliable maps. The road to the sea was to be finished by midsummer, and the surveyors had sent you, the youngest clerk in the lower hall, because nobody else would climb the scaffold of greasy timber to deliver bad news. Bramwell did not look up from his trowel. He pressed a cobble into the mortar, tapped it twice with the heel of his hand, and told you that a road was not a thing you finished. It was a thing you walked.

You thought he had lost his wits. All that month you watched him lay a single stride of paving, then sit on the kerb with a flask of cold tea and hum a tune with no ending. When the king's riders came thundering up the valley demanding a hundred miles of stone by Friday, he stood square in their path and asked them to dismount. He poured the lead rider a cup of tea and said, 'Drink, then take the next step,' and nothing more, and the rider, to everyone's astonishment, did.
Forty years have passed. You have the trowel now, and the clerks climb the scaffold to bring you their questions. Last week a girl from the lower hall asked how long the road was, and you thought of the first stone you cut that summer, the one you never set, still wrapped in sacking behind the cart shed. You told her the truth, which was that you did not know where it ended, only that the road bent back on itself like a ring, and that wherever you stood was always the beginning.
She frowned, shrugged, and went to fetch the lime. You picked up the next cobble, tapped it twice with the heel of your hand, and listened to her footsteps going down the valley, one at a time.
