Flowing script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical line of black script lettering with looping swash flourishes runs along the inner forearm, ending near the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with small shading in places that gives the strokes a soft, slightly uneven depth. The ink is black against a light skin tone, and the lettering is framed by plain skin and a dark background.

Ada found the letter folded inside the stern locker, wrapped in oilcloth and smelling of linseed and pipe tobacco. The hand was looping and careful, the kind a convent school beats into a child who blots her copybook.

Dear Walter, the oak for the new keel is cut and the joinery is square, but the lad will not hold the plane steady and I am too old to teach him twice. Tell your sister the boat is for the lake at Ullswater and is not for sale, whatever the bank writes. I chalked a line on the bench last Tuesday, Help me build a son, and the boy laughed until he saw I meant it. He has kept the chalk in his apron pocket ever since, so I think something has taken.
Ada read it twice on the upturned crate, then looked along the transom where the paint had flaked away. Beneath the grey, a name had been cut with a gouge and worked smooth with sandpaper. It was her own name, and the date under it was the week she was born.
She climbed into the half-built hull, took up the plane her father had left with its blade still sharp, and pushed it down the grain until a pale curl of oak lifted free and dropped onto her boot.
