Hair-stroke eyebrow tattoo, before and after
Other · Colour · Photo
The top photograph shows an eyebrow area with pale pinkish healing skin and only sparse, scattered hairs. The lower photograph shows the same brow filled with fine brown hair-like strokes that follow the arch of the brow, with the eyelashes visible at the bottom edge. The image is a close, evenly lit comparison of the brow before and after the procedure.

The Majestic's ceiling had been painted by a man who never finished it. Above the bandstand a plaster woman looked down with a brow drawn in one long unbroken swoop, with no hairs at all, just the suggestion of an arch that stopped short above the balcony. Mr Ferris, who ran the hall for thirty years, called her the unfinished lady and asked me to leave her be.

I came to the hall in the spring of 1953 with a box of sable brushes and a tin of umber, because my aunt scrubbed the cloakroom and nobody else would climb the scaffold. The band tuned up beneath me, a trumpet playing the same four bars until the drummer shouted at it. I worked through the foxtrot and the quickstep, one stroke at a time, each no thicker than cotton, following the curve the painter had left, rising and then dropping toward the lamp.
On the last Saturday of the season I finished her. Ferris came up the ladder with a torch and held it steady while I laid the final strokes at the outer end, where the paint had gone thin. He said nothing. The couples below had stopped dancing to watch the ceiling, and I could hear glasses being set down on the tables one by one.
When I climbed down my hands were brown to the wrist. Nobody asked who had done it. The mirror ball turned, and for a moment the whole room seemed lit from above by one long, patient and entirely watchful arch.
