Cassette tape tattoo behind the ear
Other · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a cassette tape tattoo behind the ear of a woman with auburn hair, shown in profile against a green wall. The cassette has a black outline, pink and red fill and grey shading on its inner details. A second photo on the right shows a different person's head from behind with no tattoo visible, so the image is a two-panel collage.

Dear Mags, the calliope gave out on Tuesday somewhere outside Swindon, and I have spent three days trying to get its last notes down on tape before the generator for the Ferris wheel swallows what's left of them. I've borrowed Dennis's portable recorder from the hook in the lorry and a box of blank cassettes from the church jumble, the ones with the pink shells that snap shut like a biscuit tin.

The show is down to four acts now. Madame Oriel still does the knife trick, though her hands shake and she's taken to using a cardboard blade that bends when it should. The strongman has gone to work at a carpet warehouse in Leeds and sends postcards of carpets. Teddy, the ringmaster, keeps the accounts in a tin under his bunk and talks about the summer season as if it were a fixed star.
Last night a girl from the village came up the lane with a tape player under her arm and asked whether we had any of the old songs. I said no, which was a lie. I've got forty minutes of the calliope on a tape gone slightly sticky in the heat, so I played it for her through the speaker, and she sat on an upturned crate with her chin on her knees and didn't move until the tape ran out. Then she asked if she could keep the cassette. I told her the music was already gone off it, that it only plays for whoever is listening.
She tucked it into her coat anyway. I think that's the nearest thing to a ticket sale we've had all year. Come back in spring, and bring spare batteries. Love, Iris.
