Floral vine tattoo on the lower abdomen

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two photographs side by side show the same torso from a side angle and from the front, with the face cropped out of frame. A thin, delicate vine with small pink flowers and greyish leaves runs diagonally across the lower abdomen towards the hip. The linework is light and the pink petals give the design its main colour, while the leaves and stems appear in muted greens and greys.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain came down on Saltergate market all through the morning, and the flower woman, Nell Harrow, kept her cloth over the buckets so the pink blooms would not drown. A boy came by with nothing in his hands but a length of green vine pulled from a wall. He asked what it would fetch. She said nothing, for it was only weed, and he said it was the one thing that had grown all winter.

She gave him a penny anyway, because the rain was cold and his sleeves were wet through. He wound the vine three times round her wrist and told her it would bloom if she kept it warm.

Nobody in the market believed in such things, but that week the stems on her stall put out small pink flowers, one for each day, and the leaves turned the grey-green of rainwater standing in a tin. Customers began asking for the vine, and then for the boy, who never came back to Saltergate.

On the last market day before the frost, Nell lifted the cloth off the buckets and let the rain fall on her bare arms. The vine ran from her wrist to her elbow, bright as a cut, and she laughed, because the boy had told the truth about the warmth and nothing else.
