Hairdresser on fire script on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells out the words Hairdresser on fire in flowing cursive script, set over two lines with the second line sitting beneath the first. The linework is dark black with fine, even strokes and some soft shadowing around the letters. The photograph is taken close up on pale skin, with the lettering filling most of the frame against a dark top edge.

Bev, I've swept the lino twice and found three singed rollers under the basin, so I'm leaving this on the mirror where you can't miss it. The fire brigade came at ten past four. Nobody was hurt. The Saturday appointment book has gone the way of the tongs, and Mr Hallam still has his fringe, though he stood by the door asking whether it had been done on purpose.

It started with the dryer under Mrs Pargeter's foil. Her daughter's wedding is in six weeks and she wanted it set for the photographs, so I left her under for what I thought was ten minutes, and the timer was the one thing in the building I hadn't checked. Then the smoke alarm went, and Mrs Pargeter shouted that she could smell toast, and I stood in the middle of the floor holding a wet comb like a flare. I'd like it noted that I did not panic. I simply repeated your words over and over: a hairdresser on fire still has to finish the set.
The extinguisher was in the cupboard behind the shampoo, under the boxes of the cheap brown dye we don't talk about. I got it out, pulled the pin and gave the bin a good dose, and the whole back wall turned white. Mrs Pargeter came out from under the hood with her hair in a cap of foam and said it was the best she'd looked in years, which I'm choosing to take as a compliment.
The kettle's on. I've mopped the grey off the windowsill and put the closed sign back to open, so the street knows we're still here. Come in early Monday and bring a new tin of setting lotion, because the old one has gone up with everything else.
