Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a woman's upper chest and shoulder, showing a black script phrase that reads Love me for who i am, running diagonally across the collarbone. A small solid black butterfly sits between two words, and a larger butterfly with soft grey shading sits at the edge of the shoulder. The image is warm-toned with a dark background and the face is not shown.

The ferrywoman at Saltmere had one rule, and it was older than the cable that pulled her boat across the grey water. Every passenger had to say their name aloud before the hull touched the far bank, and it had to be the one their mother gave them. Nobody argued. Nobody lied twice.

One autumn a man stepped down onto the slipway in a clean coat, with a voice he had practised on the road. He called himself Aldous Vane, a name he had bought from a clerk in the harbour town for three brass coins. Idun Marr did not look at his coat. She watched a small black butterfly settle on the rope by her hand, lift, and settle again on the edge of the tiller, as though it were reading the water. "Say it again," she said. He did. The butterfly stayed where it was, and the boat stayed on the slip.
He sat on the wet planks until the fog came in thick, and then, because the light was going, he told her the truth. His name was Tobin, and he had left a sister on the far bank who had sewn the lining of his first coat. Idun pushed off. Halfway across, a larger butterfly, soft grey at the wingtips, rose from the reeds and kept pace with the boat, its wings beating slow over the water like a lantern carried low.
On the far bank the sister waited with her arms folded. Tobin climbed out and said his name once more, plainly, and the grey butterfly folded itself down onto his shoulder and stayed there. Idun untied the rope and rowed back alone. She never asked anyone to say it again.
