Footprints and script quote on skin
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quotation runs diagonally across the skin, with a column of small black footprint silhouettes rising on the left. The lettering uses fine, even linework with minimal shading, and the ink is solid black on a light skin tone. The tight crop shows the tattoo against a dark garment at the top and a sparkly fabric at the bottom.

The Carrow was over the lane again, brown and loud, and the wedding party stood on the bank in their good boots arguing about it. Old Mother Ashby said a bride must cross the water dry or the marriage would never settle, and the Carrow had no bridge nearer than Milbrook. Hal Parr, who had been a fool for Nell Dawes since they were children, said he would carry her across himself, and Nell, who did not care for fuss, said he would drown them both and they could be buried in one hole.

He lifted her anyway. The water came up to his knees, then his thighs, and the stones under him rolled like loaves. Halfway over his foot slid and the whole river leaned on him, and for a breath neither of them spoke. Then he found the stone with his heel and climbed out onto the far bank with her held against his chest as if she weighed nothing, which she did not. The children cheered from the wrong side of the water. Nell did not cheer. She was looking back.
On the bank where they had stood, the mud was grey and smooth, and in it there was a single line of prints going down to the river and coming up again on the other side. Her shoes had never touched the ground. Only his had. "Where are mine?" she said, and he set her down on the grass and grinned like a boy. "You were carried, so you left none. That is how it works. One walks and one carries, and you take turns at not knowing which is which."
Rain began before they reached the church. The children ran back across the lane and pressed their palms into the soft mud beside his marks, and when the bride stepped down into the line, her feet fitted exactly where his had been.
