Hairdressing scissors on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large, open pair of hairdressing scissors is tattooed on the forearm, with the blades angled downward and the finger rings visible at the top. The shading is smooth and realistic, with highlights on the metal and soft grey tones on the blades and handles. The composition is centred on the arm, with a plain wall and wooden floor in the background and the lower body of a person in jeans and boots at the right edge.

Brother Anselm had cut the hair of the community for thirty-one years, and the shears had outlasted two abbots and a flood. Each Saturday he set the stool by the south window, laid a folded towel across the sill, and waited for whoever had drawn the short straw to come and sit.

This Saturday it was Brother Edwin, who was nervous and kept touching the crown of his head as if checking it was still there. "Keep still," Anselm said, lifting a lock between two fingers. The blades opened and closed with a dry, unhurried click, the sound he had come to think of as the monastery's clock, more reliable than the bell that had been cracked since Lent.
Edwin asked whether the new novice would be allowed to keep his own scissors. Anselm did not answer straight away. He had been given these by his own teacher, Brother Ruskin, on the morning he was told he had good hands and a poor memory for prayers. The pivot had been oiled every week since, and the left blade had a small nick near the tip from a day he preferred not to discuss.
When the tonsure was finished, Anselm swept the hair into the ash bucket, wiped the blades on his habit, and held them up to the light so Edwin could see the window reflected in the steel. "Good," he said. "Now you look like a man who has nothing left to hide." Edwin laughed, and the shears went back into their leather roll, closed as neatly as a psalm.
