Small key tattoo on the back of the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black key runs diagonally across the back of a hand, with a thin straight shaft and a decorative looped bow at the lower end. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the image against plain skin, with a dark background behind the hand.

The snow had already swallowed the second marker post when Tomas came stumbling up the switchbacks, waving a key at me as though it might open the weather. I took it from him anyway. It was the iron key to the lower store, the one with its bow worked into a spiral of curls, and it weighed almost nothing in my palm, which is how I knew it was the wrong one.

I had kept the Scarrow hostel at the top of the pass for forty winters, and the keys were the only thing my mother ever taught me properly. You did not carry them in a pocket. You hung them on a nail beside the stove, where you could see them from the table, so that anyone knocking at the door in the dark found the storeroom already decided for them.
Tomas had not come for flour. He wanted the long shaft of the chapel key, the one that opened the strongbox under the floor, where the pass charter lay with the names of everyone ever given a bed. I told him the box was empty, and he laughed at me, the way the young laugh when they think the old are being contrary.
So I took the lamp, went out into the white, and knelt on the cold flagstones with him watching. The box was empty because I had burned the charter in October, page by page in the stove, since the names belonged to people who had walked down the valley and never come back to claim them. The key, I told him, had only ever been for keeping things shut, and there was nothing left in there to keep. Hold the lamp, I said, and let the snow decide the rest.
