Nobody on Carrow Lane had seen the cat arrive, which was the first thing Mrs Odell held against it. It came in the spring the Hallam brothers' pawnshop shut, slipped through the grille of the back door, and by the time the bailiffs had their boots on the step it was sitting on the counter as if it had paid the rent. Hairless, grey-black as wet slate, with a bright chain hanging from one ear like a gaoler's ring of keys.

Mrs Odell kept the Hallam keys after that. She did not want them. She wanted the cat to stop staring at the strongbox in the corner, the one with a triangle scratched into its lid, so every night she sat on an upturned crate with the lamp turned low and watched the thing watch the box. Its eyes were green as bottle glass, and they did not blink when the church clock struck two.

On the night the rain finally stopped, a boy came scrabbling at the shutter with a crowbar and a face like paper. He had the look of someone who had been told a story about gold. Mrs Odell did not shout. She only said, "Mind the tail," and the cat rose from the lid in one unhurried stretch, its gold bands catching the streetlamp, and walked straight at him with its tail lifted in a question mark.

The boy ran. The cat came back, climbed onto the crate, and curled its tail neatly around Mrs Odell's wrist, as if she were the one who needed guarding. By morning the strongbox was still locked, and the crowbar lay in the gutter outside, polished clean by the rain.
