Lace-winged dragon design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A dragon in flight is drawn in solid black with a coiling, serpentine body that curls down to a looped tail. The wings and parts of the body are filled with fine, lace-like cross-hatched patterning, while the outlines are bold and smooth. The design is shown in black ink only on a white background, centred and uncropped.

The frost had come in the night and sealed the kitchen window in ferns, and Ruth Harrowby was still picking at the thread of her mother's pillow when the dog started barking at the lane. The pattern pricked into the parchment showed a dragon, wings spread like a net over the bobbins, its tail looping back on itself so the last pair had to be tied off by hand. Her mother had called it the Harrowby dragon, though nobody in the village could say why.

Outside, the wind drove snow sideways over the top field, and the ewes crowded the gate. Ruth pinned the lace to the cushion and counted pairs under her breath: twelve bobbins for the left wing, twelve for the right, the body a long plait of sixteen that would take her until the thaw. The coil was the hard part. Her mother had never let her finish it, saying a tail that closes is a tail that stays.

By dusk she had reached the neck. Her brother Tom came in stamping, shaking white from his collar, and asked whether she meant to sit there all night while the lambs froze. She said the wings were done and he could fetch the hay. He looked at the pillow for a long moment, then went back out without a word, and she heard the barn door drag shut.

When the lamp guttered she worked the last crossing and drew the tail through the loop, the thread tightening with a small sound like a breath let go. The dragon lay complete on the cloth, wings lifted, its end biting its own lace. Outside the snow kept falling on the ewes, and for the first time in a month the kitchen felt warm.
