Hamsa hand and arrow on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small vertical tattoo shows an arrow with chevron marks and a feathered tail, with a hamsa hand in the centre. The hand has ornate scrollwork, dot detailing and an eye, all drawn in fine black linework. It is set against pale skin on the inner upper arm, with the image cropped close to the body.

Right then, sit down, the lot of you, before the urn boils over and somebody cracks a hip on the parquet. You all remember Dilys Cottle. She put an arrow through the bull's-eye at the Michaelmas fair when she was eleven, and the vicar made her hand back the ribbon because she'd used his bow without asking.

Her grandmother had given her a little brass hand on a cord, palm out, with an eye pressed into the middle of it. Keep it near the string, the old woman said. The eye sees what wants to spoil your aim. Dilys wore it inside her sleeve every day after that, and the story goes that the hand grew warm whenever somebody meant her harm, which was nonsense, of course, but she believed it, and so did the Hallows boys, who stopped flicking conkers at her after that.
The winter she turned fourteen the river came over the lower field, and her little brother Tom went out after a ewe and didn't come back across the plank. Dilys took the longbow down from its hook over the range, tied a length of red wool to a shaft, and loosed it over the water with the brass hand knotted to the nock. The arrow dropped in the reeds right beside him. He caught the wool and was hauled to the bank hand over hand, cursing the whole way.
Mind you, the arrow was never the clever part. Dilys wore that brass hand under her sleeve until the day she died, and the red wool she knotted to that shaft is still tied round the lych-gate, gone the colour of old pennies, if you care to look on your way out.
