Ornate dagger on the upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A slender dagger with an ornately detailed hilt and pommel runs vertically along the arm. Fine linework and stippled dotwork add shading to the guard, the decorative gem-like shapes, and the dangling beaded chain beneath the crossguard. The tattoo is in black and grey on a plain, softly blurred background.

The shutter on Lantern Row is half down when the bell over the door rings, and you are already counting the takings in the back room with the lamp turned low. A woman with rain on her coat sets a wooden box on the counter and opens it without speaking. Inside, on green baize gone bald at the folds, lies a slender dagger no longer than your forearm.

You know the kind of thing before you touch it. The hilt is cut like a row of little windows, each pane holding a stone the size of a lentil, and from the crossguard hangs a fringe of beads on a fine chain that shivers whenever the box is tilted. "My brother's," she says. "He pawned it three times. Each time he came back for it sooner." You turn it under the lamp and see the stipple of tiny dots that makes the guard look like frost on glass, and the maker's mark worn almost to nothing.

You offer her a figure. She laughs, short and dry, and says the beads are worth more than the steel, so you start counting them to be fair. Forty-one silver, and one dull grey bead near the bottom that doesn't match the rest. She watches you find it. "That one's his," she says. "He put it on himself, the week before he went north. Don't sell that one. Sell the rest if you must."

She leaves the money she came for on the counter and takes nothing back. After she has gone, you hang the dagger on the hook above the till, where the lamp catches the gems and the chain swings a little and settles. Out past the glass the last tram sighs over the bridge, and you sit with the grey bead cool between your fingers, deciding which of you is going to keep it.
