Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it has a temper like my aunt. Up on the ridge above Harrow Mere there was a house of monks who kept a lotus pond in the cloister, because the abbot said a place of quiet needs one thing that grows out of mud and never complains about it. Every spring the flowers opened in the dark before dawn, and every spring the brothers climbed the steps to watch them, counting petals as though a miscount were a sin.

One year the old gatekeeper, Brother Oswin, lost the use of his right hand to a fever. He could still lift his left, so he took to inking its palm each morning, circles and hooks and little dots like rain falling on the mere. The novices laughed at him. Then one night a boy called Piers came to the gate with a fishing net full of cold water and nothing else in it. Oswin raised his left palm to the lantern, and there, where the lines of a hand should be, sat an open eye that had not been there the day before.

The eye saw the boy's trouble plainly. His mother lay in the boathouse and would not wake, and the lake had given him nothing for three days. Oswin said no clever thing. He only turned his palm toward the water, and the water in the net went still and bright, and out in the cloister the lotus shut its petals one by one, the way a person does when they have finished crying.

By morning the mere had a ring of small rings on it, the way water does when something has been set down gently. The boy's mother woke with her hand pressed to her chest and asked who had been singing. Oswin kept his palm open after that, and the brothers say the eye still blinks when the lotus is about to open. I have never climbed up to check, so do not take my word for it.
