Lotus flower tattoo design sketch

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing on white paper shows a lotus flower with layered petals, leaves and a central mandala-style pattern. Fine linework and stippled dots form curved arcs beneath the flower, and a slim ornamental stem with a scrolled motif extends downwards. The design is in black and grey only, centred on the page with a hand partly visible at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are the last to pull the shutters down at Crofton Market, because the rain has come in sideways off the river and nobody else wants to stand in it. The awning sags over the stall of secondhand dishes and the brass scales your uncle swore were honest. Mrs Pryce from the fish van shouts across that you'll catch your death, and you tell her you caught it years ago, and she laughs and tosses you a bag of cockles for the pot.

In the drawer under the till is the sheet of cartridge paper your uncle left you, rolled tight and smelling of pipe smoke. A lotus is inked on it in fine black lines, petals stacked like the rings of a mandala, with a row of stippled dots looping beneath it like drips from a gutter. He used to say a lotus grows out of mud and still sheds the water off its leaves without ever getting wet. You thought it was the sort of thing men said after a second whisky. This afternoon a boy with a soaked rucksack came in wanting to sell a tarnished lamp for his gran's funeral money, and you paid him the fair price without haggling, and you thought of the lotus then.

At six the rain is still going. You fold the drawing into your coat, fasten the padlock, and walk the long way home past the empty fish van and the bins steaming under the lamps. The drops run off your collar and your hair and down your wrists the way they run off a leaf. By the bridge you stop and unfold the paper, shielding it with your palm, and the thin stem line seems to lead you on down the page, past the last scroll, toward a door you have not yet opened.
