Hamsa hand with lotus and eye design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing on paper of a hamsa hand outline filled with lace-like patterns and scalloped edges, with a lotus flower in front and an open eye at its centre. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading on the petals and eye, and dotted chains with small diamond shapes hang below. The composition is centred on a single design with the background left plain.

Sit yourself on that bench, and mind the wet on the slats, for the pond never lets its edges dry. You'll have seen the hand over the old potting-shed door. Five fingers, lace all round the cuffs like a Sunday petticoat. My grandfather's grandfather cut it from a slab of Portland stone and set an eye in the palm so the garden would always know who was walking in it.

Now, in the summer of the great drought, a lad called Tobias Greave came over the wall at dusk to steal lotus seed for his sister, who'd been told the pods would cure her cough. He had three pods in his coat before he looked up. The eye above the shed door was open, and the gravel round the pond was lit like a plate of silver. He stood so still that a moth landed on his ear.
Nobody came out with a lantern. Instead old Mrs Abernethy, who kept the garden then, came down the path with a jug of barley water and two cups. She sat on the wall and told him the lotus holds its seeds in a head like a pepper pot, and that they'll sleep in the mud for a hundred years waiting for someone patient. "Take them," she said, "but take them knowing they're for planting, not for coughs."
He went home and planted every one. The pond is full of them now, and that eye still looks down at the water at first light, the way you'd check a child was still breathing.
