Hand-drawn arrow designs sheet

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows about twenty black ink arrow designs arranged in columns, with straight shafts, arrowheads and feathered or leaf-like fletching at the tails. Several designs show two arrows crossed in an X, and the linework is thin and sketchy with varied weight. The image is entirely black on white with no colour and no body placement shown.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the wind, because it comes up the pass like a dog that has been told it cannot have the bone. Nobody in Harrowgate calls it by its proper name any more, so I will not start now. My grandmother said the pass was called Two Shafts, after the brothers who kept it.

Teodor and Ilse were archers for the valley lord, the best two of the twelve he kept. They fletched their own arrows from the grey goose feathers that came down off the crags each spring, and they bound the feathers with thread dyed with lichen so no one could mistake one brother's arrow for the other's. When they were sent to hold the high notch against the raiders, they laid their arrows crossed over the doorway of the hut, one pair each, as a promise to come back for the other.

The raiders came in the third week of frost. Teodor loosed until his fingers split at the knuckles, and the snow below the notch went red and then white again. When the valley lord's men finally climbed up, they found Ilse sitting against the hut wall with her bow across her knees and not one arrow left in her quiver. Teodor was gone. Only the crossed shafts remained above the door, and one of them had been snapped clean and bound again with a new feather.

So if you go up in autumn and the cloud sits on the pass, look for two arrows laid over each other in the stones. Ilse mended one of them for him and never told anyone which. Some say he came back down the far slope in spring, others that he never left at all. I think she knew, and that was enough to keep the shafts crossed.
